Cycling in the rain: what to wear?
Do you love cycling in all seasons? You don’t want to give up your bike in the city on a rainy day? Here are some tips on how to equip yourself with waterproof clothing to cope with even the most adverse weather conditions. The first rule of thumb is still to dress like an onion, with good quality technical underwear and a breathable T-shirt with short or long sleeves, depending on the season.
But beyond that, what are the essentials for cycling on a rainy day? Here they are!
Windproof jacket and rain cape
In cold and rainy weather, you need to cover up a little more and be prepared to be sheltered from the rain. It is advisable to choose a good quality waterproof and windproof jacket, which will not only protect you, but will also be breathable, allowing the heat produced by your body to escape. If the rain is heavy, it is a good idea to take a rain cape with you. When closed, it takes up very little space and when worn, it fits snugly to the body thanks to special closures on the arms and also protects the legs thanks to a system for attaching it to the handlebars.
Shoes, gaiters and socks to keep your feet warm and dry
Keeping your feet warm and dry is one of the first things you worry about when it rains and freezes. The secret lies in choosing the right combination of layers for the weather conditions: shoes, gaiters and socks: here are our tips.
- Shoes. Are there shoes that are really waterproof? Technology has come a long way and there are many products on the market today that meet these requirements. When choosing a shoe, there are three basic aspects to consider: waterproofness, wind resistance and breathability. The sole should also not be underestimated: it is best to choose a non-slip shape and materials that provide better grip on the pedals and stability when getting off the bike.
- Waterproof gaiters. No waterproof shoe will stand up to heavy rain. The best solution is waterproof gaiters, which can be worn over shoes with a good closure system at the calf to keep water out.
- Technical socks. As well as choosing the right footwear, make sure you choose the right socks. It is very important to keep your feet warm when cycling in the rain. It is therefore advisable to choose technical socks that offer a good level of thermoregulation and protection, as well as antibacterial materials to ensure optimal comfort at all times.
Rain trousers
For complete protection from the rain, you can also equip yourself with windproof and waterproof trousers that can be easily and quickly pulled on over your clothing thanks to side vents.
Gloves: yes or no?
Just like your feet, your hands deserve the same level of protection, especially on rainy days. Two different types of gloves are recommended. A lightweight model, with or without fingers, possibly reinforced to protect your hands from prolonged rubbing on the handles. A heavier pair of gloves to protect your hands from rain and wind.
Helmet and cap: are they compulsory?
Even though they are not compulsory, wearing a helmet is always the wisest choice! All the more so when it is raining or in bad weather, when the road surface is slippery and visibility is poor. Here are some simple tips for wearing a helmet in rain and wind. You can wear a tight-fitting under-helmet or a cycling cap under your helmet, which is soft against your head and has a flexible visor to help prevent water from dripping onto your helmet. There are also waterproof helmet covers that can be worn over the helmet, preferably in bright colours and with reflective strips to increase visibility.
Travel bags
Now that we are fully protected from the rain and wind, it is time to think about how to protect the things we carry. We choose waterproof and durable panniers that are lighter and can be attached directly to the frame or with more structure to be attached to the luggage rack. The Girolibero panniers, for example, have a system that allows them to be attached to the bike quickly and easily. Pay particular attention to the material and closures, which should be airtight and strong. And remember that a good waterproof bag will also allow you to carry a change of clothes. At the end of a day’s riding in the rain, wearing something warm and dry is a well-deserved reward!
Visibility in rain
In rainy weather, visibility on the road is often reduced. Remember to make yourself visible by wearing brightly coloured clothing, preferably fluorescent, with reflective strips, and by equipping your bike with front and rear lights that can be seen from a distance.
